ABOUT THE BLUE LIGHTNING TRACK CLUB

Coach Strother believes when coaching an athlete, to get them to believe in what is possible is an unparalleled competitive force, and commits the entire season to unlocking this power and energy within his Champions.

The Blue Lightning Track Club, formed in 2014, is an approved AAU and USA Track and Field youth club based in Conyers, GA.  The club is led by Head Coach Steve Strother, a graduate of Auburn University where he trained and competed as a full scholarship athlete under Mel Rosen, 2-time Olympic Coach and head coach at Auburn University.

Coach Strother is a Certified Double-Goal Coach with the Positive Coaching Alliance and brings tremendous experience and skill to the Blue Lightning Track Club. He was a 4-time NCAA Track and Field All-American, 11-time All-SEC Sprinter, and SEC Champion. His team won four SEC Championships during his Auburn athletic career.  Coach Strother was inducted into the New Rochelle, N.Y.  Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and was recently profiled by Auburn University to represent their School of Arts and Sciences to potential Auburn students around the world.

In addition to exposing youth to the exciting sport of track and field and the foundations of speed, strength, and endurance – Coach Strother, is known for fostering a positive and healthy team environment and unselfishly collaborating with other coaching resources to provide the best training to Blue Lightning Track Club athletes.

Coach Strother believes in a positive, motivational, and mentoring approach to coaching and uses a Champion’s Mantra with every athlete he coaches. The Champion’s Mantra – Coach Strother refers to all of his athletes as Champions, he motivates and builds his Champions up mentally and physically. He reinforces and instills confidence with every practice, activity, and communication. He believes in a no-negativity approach to our Champions and team, and that every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and improve.

The Champion’s Mantra approach – we motivate and build our Champions (athletes) up mentally and physically. We reinforce and instill confidence with every practice, activity, and communication. We believe in a no-negativity approach to our Champions and team, and that every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and improve.

Ben-Gipson, Coach at Blue Lighting Track Club
Ben-Gipson, Coach at Blue Lighting Track Club

Coach Ben Gipson trains our middle-distance runners and race walkers and brings his love of the sport to the Blue Lightning Track Club. This year, two 3000 meter runners and a 1500 meter racewalker became AAU District State Track Champions under his watch.Coach Ben says, “When I coach I try and instill two things. Hard work and good life choices pay off.”

Coach Ben is not your typical track warrior with years of experience on the circuit, he developed his love for sports and work ethic as a basketball star in Alabama.  He was chosen as the District 7 MVP in the championship season in the State of Alabama.  After basketball, he began running for fitness, which included marathons, 5 and 10 k’s. When his son, Noah Gipson, showed an interest in running, he began to train and expose him to the wonderful world of cross country and track and field. Noah is the 2017 AAU State District Champion.

The Blue Lightning Track Club is fortunate to have Coach Ben as an integral member of their coaching staff.

Our track and field schedule cover three seasons:

  • Indoor (Jan-Feb)
  • Spring (Mar-Jun)
  • Summer (Jun-Jul)
