How Athletics Improves Academics
The Study - Proof
Research shows a strong link between sports participation and improved academic performance, self-esteem, and confidence. Physically active individuals generally have better health and perform better on cognitive tests.
A study by James Pivarnik at the American College of Sports Medicine found that the fittest middle school students scored nearly 30 percent higher on standardized tests than their least-fit peers. Similarly, a Los Angeles Unified School District study of 35,000 student-athletes found that these students attended school 21 more days each year and had GPAs that were 0.55 to 0.74 points higher than those of non-athletes. Barbara Fiege, the commissioner of athletics for the district, stated that participating in athletics correlates with higher attendance, GPAs, and test scores in both English and Math.
The success of these students is often attributed to the guidance provided by qualified coaches who understand the link between academic and athletic achievement.
